Mary Ellen Olbrisch (LAS 1973)
Mary Ellen is this year's recipient of the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Distinguished Faculty Service Award. She was honored for service in her roles as a clinical health psychology educator and practitioner.

Called one of the founding mothers of clinical health psychology, Mary Ellen, a professor in the Department of Psychiatry, entered the burgeoning area early in her career. Immediately after graduate school, she served on the Education and Training Committee for the American Psychological Associations new Division of Health Psychology, where she was instrumental in developing the curriculum for the training of clinical health psychologists, as well as the creation of the board certification process for the field.

Mary Ellen's work on the Division of Health Psychology's Education and Training Committee was the first in a long list of committees and organizations for which she has donated her time to benefit the community, the university and her profession. Her service to the profession includes serving on editorial boards of major medical journals, as a founding member of the American Board of Clinical Health Psychology, and on the ethics committee of the American Board of Professional Psychology.

Her work with screening and preparing patients psychologically for organ transplantation and partial liver donation also have contributed to Mary Ellen's reputation for service. She has long been know for her leadership in a national discussion of fair treatment of patients with mental illness by organ transplant programs. She was a member of the first living liver donation team at VCU in 1998 and has been a leader in national discussion of issues of ethical practice, fairness and justice in organ allocation, as well as in the limits and possibilities in expanding organ transplantation.

Five years ago, Mary Ellen branched out into another rapidly growing area: obesity and weight-loss surgery. As in her work in transplantation, she helps patients understand what the surgery entails and what they can expect. "I really have worked hard to make a contribution to make patients more educated so they are ready for the surgery," she says.

Kenneth Burak (PHD 2005)
Ken's doctoral disseration, "Logic and Resistance - Reading Hegel in the Age of the War on Terrorism," was published by VDM Verlag, a publishing company that regularly publishes academic research, in August of this year.

According to Ken, the 156-page book brings together two great intellectual traditions to try to make sense of the war on terrorism. These traditions include the idealism of the 19th century German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and the views of the 20th century psychoanalyist Jacques-Marie-Emile Lacan.

Ken is currently an assistant professor of philosophy at Northampton Community College.

The website contains over 200 personal care products from over 30 leading international manufacturers. Michael writes "What sets Body Sense apart from several other natural and organic websites is the fact we only carry products that qualify for the lowest hazard rating on Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database. While many other sites classify their products as 'natural' or 'organic,' Body Sense chooses instead to rely on a trusted non-profit such as Environmental Working Group. Our goal is to make it easier for consumers to find safe, non-toxic personal care products for themselves and their families.
