The Office of Alumni Relations would like to invite you to join us for a discussion with Dr. Shailja Sharma and Dr. John Shanahan on Asian writers and literature. While earlier Indian fiction in English was associated primarily with magical realism, recent decades have seen a proliferation of genres such as the historical epic (A Suitable Boy, The God of Small Things and the Ibis trilogy), the political thrill (Association of Small Bombs, A Case of the Exploding Mangoes), the police procedural (The Prisoner, Sacred Games, Delhi Crime), political allegory (Red Birds, The Lives of Others), and chick lit (Karachi You're Killing Me!). In this event, Dr. Sharma and Dr. Shanahan will examine cultural works about South Asia's rapidly changing politics, gender roles, social media use and history as well as the costs of development.
